About the workshop

Land and Seascape painting is one of Watercolour’s most satisfying and popular genres. We know this because our fundamental love of countryside can be combined with the thrill of achieving real depth for a change of sometimes miles - not metres - and with a watery medium that is absolutely perfect for achieving haze and distance.

But we need to be able to do it reliably, with an understanding of the land and sea’s colours and tones that can change and make it look a long way away. Design and composition will be a part of the course too, so we know what to prioritise when we look at a scene for painting.

And of course, we’ll have to look at motifs and foreground subject elements such as sheds, barns, cows, boats, waves and people that add the finishing touches. It’s all tremendous fun and you must come along!

What will I learn?

This workshop will begin with a preamble on the correct Watercolour philosophy, followed by some detailed investigations into common land and seascape subject matter. This includes mountains and beaches, as well as scale indicators and narrative elements.

Day 1 will focus on Landscape painting Day 2 will focus on Seascapes.

Greg will break down the material in to their shapes, tones and colours, and discuss the importance of design and composition. Numerous explanatory demos will enrich this workshop.

There will be lots of tips on how to avoid potential pitfalls.

Learn how to understand the various stages of wetness of paper as well as paint consistency in creating these magical effects. Small studies and planning will guide the student as well as build confidence in their own work.

Who is this workshop suitable for?

Suitable for students that have been exposed to the medium of watercolour as well as the more advanced student wanting to learn from a master watercolourist.
