Trompe-l'œil: Painting Leaves Realistically | Hobie Porter

About this workshop

Trompe-l’œil is a French painting genre, translating as “deception of the eye”. The workshop is about deceiving your audience into believing that the object you have painted is real. Oil painting is a perfect medium for Trompe-l’œil due to its lush material properties and its tendency to remain open for longer than other mediums - thus you can spend time finessing your work and building richly layered paint films. You can achieve a remarkable range of subtle contrasts with oil paint; it is a medium conducive to nuance.

Your task will be to select some dry/semi-dry leaves, bring them into the studio and then paint them so convincingly that your audience believes you have merely tacked them onto your canvas, thus anticipating the question: “Are you going to leave them stuck on like that?” Such a question will be your ultimate compliment!

What will I learn?

How to paint leaves to make them look like they’re stuck on.
Gain insight into Hobie’s method of accurately mixing the colour that you see - every time. No more guesswork, no more mystery.
Learn about how to make shadows look rich and believable.
Learn how to build your oil paint up slowly in layers and produce lush colours.
