About this workshop

This workshop is suitable for adults of all skill levels! Students will explore how to capture the detail, form and character of birds under the guidance of friendly and experienced instructor Kerry Daley. 

By the end of the weekend, students will complete studies and finished paintings and gain the confidence to approach birds in gouache with precision and creativity.

What will I learn?

Through guided exercises, step-by-step demonstrations, and dedicated practice time, students will develop essential gouache painting techniques such as:

  • Layering
  • Blending
  • Balancing opacity with transparency

Students will explore feathers, posture and texture while learning:

  • Colour harmony
  • Composition
  • Ways to simplify complex shapes for lively and accurate results

What do I need to bring?

  • A4 300g paper (watercolour/mixed media/ cartridge)
  • Watercolour paintbrushes (flat medium and round medium and small)
  • Gouache (Art Spectrum): Primary Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna, Primary Red, Black, White
  • Small sealable containers (see photo) to place paint in while working
  • Palette (white ceramic plate or disposable palette)
  • Small spray bottle
  • Paper towel
  • Water containers (2 each)

Bring your lunch and snacks or you can purchase from cafes close by.

About the Tutor

Kerry Daley is a visual artist and arts educator based in Brisbane, Australia. She holds a Fine Arts degree with majors in Drawing and Art History, and a Higher Diploma in Education. Kerry maintains an active professional practice across multiple disciplines including drawing, painting, and ceramics, with a strong focus on technical skill, craftsmanship, and disciplined studio practice.

With extensive teaching experience, Kerry is known for her clear, structured, and supportive approach to instruction. Her teaching prioritises skill development, confident decision-making, and a deep understanding of materials. She helps students build both technical ability and independence in their practice. Her personal work explores themes of identity, environment, and the relationship between the natural and the constructed, informing a teaching approach that is grounded, thoughtful, and practical.
