Beautiful Blooms - Create a Colourful Floral Still Life using Oils | Kate Quinn

Join local Brisbane painter Kate Quinn as she teaches you to create a beautiful floral still life.

This workshop will take you through Kate's process to create a still life of flowers, fruit and vessels, using oils on canvas.

Kate paints 'alla prima' using oils - meaning, she paints wet on wet in one sitting, rather than letting layers dry, as other artists may.

What will I learn?

Kate will teach you her own techniques, and will cover the following:

  • how to create a visually appealing composition
  • how she prepares canvases and chooses subjects
  • techniques for manipulating the oil paints with a medium
  • how to blend the paint to create a life-like but slightly abstracted visual result.
  • how to use shadow to create three dimensions to your painting

Day 1

On our first day we will warm up with a fun exercise or two. Kate will talk you through how she prepares her canvases and chooses her compositions, and will discuss some of her best tips for a great still life. We will start our painting by working on the vase and flowers. We will have breaks for tea and coffee, and a nice lunch break, so there's plenty of rest between concentration.

Day 2

On our second day we will continue working on our painting, bringing in foreground and background colour and pattern, adding highlights, and painting the sides of our canvases to finish off. At the end we can look at our work all together, take some photos and congratulate ourselves on our beautiful paintings!
