Create your own Still Life in Oils, with nationally-renowned realist painter and Archibald and Doug Moran Prize finalist, Andrew Bonneau.

In this 3 day workshop, Andrew will guide you through the fundamental principles of still life painting, including composition, light effects, colour relationships and capturing different textures through oil paint.

What will I learn?

You will be guided through the process of creating your own still life, including:
• setting up a carefully considered arrangement of objects and light source
• making a drawing of the set-up
• transferring the drawing to canvas or panel
• painting a transparent underpainting and then work on the final painting in opaque and transparent colour.

Along the way, there will be discussions about colour theory and paint quality, as well as plenty of opportunity for personal feedback on your work.

This workshop is suitable for students with some knowledge and skills in drawing and oils.

What do I need to bring?

Canvas:
One primed linen or cotton canvas or board approx. 9" x 12" or 12" x 14" (approx 23x30cm or 30x36cm)
Andrew recommends putting one or two layers of very light grey or brown oil paint on the support so the painting surface isn't too absorbent when you go to paint. You can use white mixed with a very small amount of burnt or raw umber. This will need several days to dry before the workshop. You could even add liquin to help dry quicker.

Paint:
White - lead, flake or Titanium; Yellow ochre; Cadmium yellow Light or Mid; Raw Sienna; Cadmium red light or scarlet; Alizarin Crimson; Terra rosa; Venetian red or Indian Red; Burnt Sienna; Ultramarine Blue; Phthalo Blue; Ivory Black; Burnt Umber; Raw Umber
Alternatively, we are offering the option of hiring the oil paints (listed above), for the 3 day workshop for $100.

Brushes:
A variety of sizes (small to medium); Several small brushes (E.g. size 0, 1, 2, 3 etc.); Synthetic or sable are recommended as well as one large hog hair brush.

Other:
HB Pencil, Kneaded eraser
Paper - 1 sheet, about 18" x 24" (46x61 cm), cartridge, not too rough or smooth
Blade and sandpaper for sharpening pencils
Palette knife
Palette (wooden is recommended, sealed with oil or varnish)
Objects - bring a few objects of your choice. Think of variety of shape, size, colour, tone and texture. Remember that it's only a 3 day workshop so nothing too complicated.

You will be supplied with:

• individual lightbox set-up for still life
• standing easels, tables and chairs
• tea, coffee and biscuits (you might like to bring your own cup)
