Abstract Florals in Acrylic and Mixed Media | Rob REK

In this 2-day workshop, experienced tutor and multi-award winning artist REK will demonstrate the loose multi-media style of floral painting he is known for, and impart skills to help you take your painting to the next level.

What will I learn?

Translating details from fresh floral arrangements to canvas, this workshop explores freedom of using acrylics and will expand your mind with other medias to create beautiful modern artwork.

You will work on building up layers, composition ideas, different acrylic mediums, effective use of colours to achieve harmonious results plus many more tricks of the trade gained from Rob's 15 plus years of real-life experience as a professional artist.

Who is this workshop suitable for?

This is suitable for beginners to intermediate skill-level artists.

What do I need to bring?

Bring your tablet or laptop and be guided by the materials list below:

  • Canvas paper (300gsm) for practice 30x40cms
  • Stretched Canvas 60x90cms
  • Palette Knife (Monte Marte No.11)
  • Staedtler B pencil, eraser and sharpener
  • Lint roll with peel-off sticker
  • Box of willow charcoal
  • Liquitex or Posca Acrylic pens - your choice of colours
  • Your range of brushes, which could include Neef Synthetic Filberts, sizes 6, and 8 as well as Neef Filbert size 12
  • Royan & Langnickel Angular Taklon brush - set of 3
  • Recommended Golden Paints - all Matisse Flow Acrylic:  Phthalo Green, Burnt Umber, Phthalo Blue (Green shade), Paynes Grey, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium White, Quinachridone Red
  • Liquitex Flow Medium

Bring your lunch and snacks or you can purchase from cafes close by.

About Rob REK

Rob REK is an established professional artist and gallery owner based in Brisbane. His popular artworks draw inspiration from the beauty and intricate details found in the natural world, in particular he has become known as a realistic avian specialist and botanical abstractionist.

REK Studied at the Brisbane Institute of Art and his original works are represented by five respected professional art galleries across Australia..   

His artwork has been commissioned for children’s books, appeared on Australian national television and has been a finalist in numerous art prizes.  .  In 2021 REK was the winner of the Sixth Annual Hinchinbrook Birdlife Art Awards held by The TYTO Regional Art Gallery and in 2022 was the People’s choice winner of the 43rd annual Hinchinbrook Awards.  

He is a member of the Queensland Wildlife Artists' Society.  In 2020 REK was the feature artist and guest judge at the Royal Queensland art Societies' Biannual Exhibition "All Creatures and Wild Things".
