Painting the Portrait in Oils over 2 Saturdays | Isabella Allis
Access to Oil Colours Available for $40
Canvas and Gesso Boards available for sale from the Bienarté shop
About this workshop
2019 inaugural Brisbane Portrait Prize finalist, Isabella Allis, teaches her insights into portraiture and the oil painting techniques she uses. In this 2-day step-by-step portraiture workshop, a reference photo will be supplied by Isabella so that the focus will be on learning techniques that you can later apply to your own artworks.
What will I learn?
You will cover all stages of creating a portrait, starting with the drawing phase, where we will look at measuring methods and establishing a strong accurate underdrawing.
Then we will look at planning the painting and the initial tonal block-in of the drawing.
During the painting phase, we will look at colour particularly as it pertains to flesh tones as well as establishing a full range of values in order to create the illusion of 3-dimensional form.
We will also look at the ordered sequence involved in oil painting that will allow you to maximise the wonderfully rich qualities inherent in the oil paints.
Who is this course suitable for?
This course is suitable for all skill levels, however, basic knowledge of either oil painting and/or drawing is a prerequisite.
What do I need to bring?
Please prepare your canvas or board at least a week before the workshop by applying a layer of light brown oil paint to it (this can be burnt umber with white, or burnt sienna with white, or raw umber with white).
Isabella recommends a 30cm x 40cm sized canvas or primed board.
If you book the workshop in the final week and therefore do not have time to prepare the canvas with oil colour, you can apply a layer of light brown acrylic paint (burnt umber with white, or burnt sienna with white, or raw umber with white). This way the paint will be dry in time for the workshop.
