About this workshop
Join the award-winning Melbourne based artist, Judy Drew for a two day workshop. Judy will lead you to paint a portrait in pastels with knowledge and the secrets of her exquisite painting techiniques!
What will I learn?
DAY 1: The day will begin with a short talk and demonstration working directly from a clothed life model. Working on Black Mei Teinte textured paper the students will begin to build up fine layers of colour. Students will be encouraged to closely observe the form, structure and placement of features, in an attempt to achieve a good likeness. We will look at the works of the Post Impressionists and how they, through the influence of Japanese Art, were able to infuse their work with light and a greater intensity of colour. We will discuss colour choices, how to create a strong composition and how to introduce a more contemporary feel.
DAY 2 : We will be be continuing our coloured work in pastel. We will talk about how to best indicate patterns in fabric, treatment of the background, and how to intensify the colour with the aid of fixative. We will assess the overall impact we are trying to achieve and work on how to link certain elements within the work to create a powerful sense of design.
