What Goes Where? Mixed Media | John Lovett

The importance of planning prior to painting.

It is easy to simply copy what is in front of you but by planning, rearranging and adjusting a much stronger painting will emerge.
Getting the big structural arrangement right from the start also makes the painting process much easier and freer.
Join John Lovett in exploring the importance of planning and placement as we work through a variety of different subjects.

John Lovett will take everyone through the following painting processes:
We will use a variety of materials and techniques to squeeze more out of our subjects. Our goal will be to amplify the character and atmosphere of the subject using watercolour, gouache, ink, charcoal, gesso and a variety of pencils.
We will take an experimental approach, allowing accidental effects to occur, but learning when and how to modify and control these effects.
We will work with what emerges from the developing painting, rather than trying to produce a predetermined result.
We will work hard, it will be a lot of fun and, as well as learning some brand new skills, we will produce some exciting paintings.

What will I learn?

Under John’s guidance and demonstrations, you will learn how to:
Carefully examine subjects before manipulating them with a series of thumbnail sketches to clarify and adjust the composition.
Extract maximum impact from the subject, not merely reproduce it.
Examine a number of different watercolour techniques and also incorporate gouache, gesso, ink and charcoal into our paintings.

You will be provided with a variety of subjects, as well as plenty of advice and assistance from John. You will also have ample opportunity to put your learning into practice, have a lot of fun and perhaps even produce some masterpieces!
