Introduction to Portrait in Watercolour | David Wells

This workshop describes painting portraits in watercolour in clearly explained, achievable steps.

What will I learn?

You will be using a combination of washes, layering and dry brush techniques to create individual artworks and explore personal expression, within a carefully structured class.

Who is this workshop suitable for?

No drawing skills are required for this course, so it is suitable for absolute beginners, as well as for anyone who would like to begin to develop their skills in portraiture and watercolour.

What do I need to bring?

  • Watercolour Brushes. David uses a Winsor & Newton squirrel quill, 2 flats 1/4 and 1/8 inch (4), and a “000” detail brush. It is not essential to have exactly the same, so please bring whatever brushes you have and love.
  • A glass or jar for water
  • A pallet. David uses the lid of a fast food container, but feel free to bring what ever suits you.
  • A rag
  • A pad of watercolour paper for testing colours (ideally 300 GSM)
  • Ivory Black
  • Paynes Grey
  • Burnt Umber
  • Caput Mortuum
  • English Venetian Red
  • Gold brown
  • Magnesium Brown
  • Quinacridon Gold

-Pallete - Winsor & Newton and Schmincke. (but brand not essential)
-Bring your ipad if you have one.

You can order the use of the watercolours, paper and reference photo for $40. Please preorder your kit and bring cash on the day.
